Writing Task 1

Language in a Cultural Context (Gender)

The external assessment of Part 1 of your English Language and Literature course is known as Written Task 1.  You will repeat this assessment next year in a different part of the course, and you will choose the version that will be submitted to IB.  This grade will account for 10% of your score for the two year course.

As with the Further Oral Activity you should approach this year's Written Task 1 as though it will be the one your are submitting for external assessment.

Task:
You will write an 800-1000 word written assignment that addresses a gender related topic and a rationale of 200-300 words.  You may not write an essay instead you may choose from the list of suggestions or seek approval of another type of written task.

Speech
Feature Article
Opinion Editorial
Letter or Pair/Group of letters to the editor
Interview

**Read several examples of your text type and model yours after the best examples.  Utilize the same level of diction, same types of rhetorical strategies, the same structure etc

Complete or revise your rationale after you have written the assignment so that you can explain how you have addressed all the criteria listed on your proposal sheet.

The rationale must explain:

How the content of the task is linked to a particular part of the course and its learning outcomes.  Our essential questions were:
How is gender identity constructed?
How does one's culture affect one's understanding of a text?
How can language be used to convey or challenge traditional social roles?
How are individuals impacted by society's standards regarding gender?
How the task is intended to explore particular aspects of the course
The nature of the task chosen
Information about the audience, purpose and the social, cultural or historical context in which the task is set

The rationale should not only include knowledge about the text or topic studied but also about the formal conventions of the text type produced and how they relate to the aims of the task.

Latin America Research Project - 10H

Latin American Revolutions Project 10H
By the late 1700's, the revolutionary spirit that engrossed the United States and Europe spread to Latin America. People were dissatisfied with their social and political limitations and began to demand change.

Directions::::  As a group, you will research one of the assigned Latin American countries and become experts about its revolution.  You will then create a presentation (PowerPoint, Prezi, I-Movie etc)  and teach the class about your assigned country.  

Below is a list of the countries to be researched: 

Mexico

Brazil

Haiti 

Venezuela

Argentina 

El Salvador

Dominican Republic  

If there is a Latin American country your group would like to study that is NOT on the list, please let me know and we can discuss it.

In your presentation you must include: 

- A brief biography and a picture of the revolutionary leader(s)
How did he rise to power/position of leadership? In what way did he lead the revolt? How was he a successful leader? How was he an unsuccessful leader?  

- Evaluation of the Revolution
What were the causes (think about social, political, and economic reasons) of the Revolution? How did it begin? What social classes were involved and why? What were some important battles?

- Results of the Revolution
Who became leader, What were the social, political, and econmic results of the Revolution? Explain if you believe the Revolution was successful or not. Please include two maps of your country: one before the Revolution and one after the Revolution.

Individual
Each individual in the group will be responsible for handing in two individual assessments: 
Self Evaluation/Reflection using the project rubric 
1 page written response  to this statement in regard to Latin America
Revolutions:  Do the ends justify the means? Please use specific examples from your research and your class notes from the presentations.

Introduction to Culture Activity - Cultural Foods

Goal: Your task is to research a specific culture and cuisine. This activity will focus on taking information from printed books, not the internet. This activity will count as a quiz grade.  As you research your culture, please respond to the following questions

What is the geographic location of your culture? What influences does this have on the food that is eaten?




Describe one major holiday. Please include any food that is eaten

Identify 6 Special Ingredients

Define 2 of them that you are not familiar with.

Please describe in detail one of the recipes in your book. Why did this look good to you? What are the main flavor components? When would you serve this dish? Is this a dish that possible to make in class this year? Why or Why not?

Directions: Closely read ten articles provided and write an evidence-based argument on the topic below:


Is our Fate/Destiny predetermined? Or do we make our own Fate/Destiny?
 

Your task: Carefully read the articles provided. Then, using evidence from at least three of the texts AND The Alchemist, write a well-developed argument about the topic above (4-5 pages).  Clearly establish your claim, distinguish your claim from an alternate or opposing claims, and use specific and relevant evidence from at least three of the articles and the novel to develop your argument. Do not simply summarize each text.

 

Guidelines:

Genocide Project

Modern Genocide Activity
·     1)  Conduct research to find documents from the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide.  Define Genocide in your own words.

3)Conduct research to find at least two appropriate eyewitness accounts from atrocities in Armenia, Bosnia, Cambodia or Darfur, Sudan.  Take notes on the graphic organizer.  As you take notes, keep in mind that this information will be used for Part 4. 

4)Write an analytical paragraph in which you identify the similarities and/or differences of the accounts, using specific details from the eyewitness accounts. You should also consider using appropriate information from your chart in part 2.
