Argument Paper Assignment

What Hinders Effective Communication?

Topic: The Role of Disablilities and Disorder in Effective Communication

Assignment: Using the information from class discussion, the articles and film you explored, and the novel The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night, choose one of the following scenarios to base you paper:

A) You have been selected as an advocate for a student with special needs. Your job is to ensure that this student receives the best possible education and opportunities. Some people within the community have expressed concern to the Board of Education in this district about this student attending its school. Your job is to educate the panel about your student's differences and exceptionalities, and to convince them that s/he will not be a liability, but an asset to its student population.

B) You are leading the counter argument to oppose the advocate in situation A.
Your job is to convince the members of the school board in your district that to allow the mainstreaming of this student with special needs is a grievous error.
In fact, you believe s/he should be placed in a special facility designed for those who have disabilities.

In order to formulate your argument, you will need to decide whether you want to write about Autism or choose one of the other disorders that may hinder communication.
Here are your choices:
Epilepsy
Mood or Mental Disorders (bipolar, schizophrenia, phobias, OCD's)
Tourettes
Hearing or Visual Impairments
Paralysis or amputees
Cerebral Palsy
Meniere's Disease
A disorder of your choice that I have approved
